REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati stressed the importance of synergies between academics, bureaucracies, and practitioners in building a fair and inclusive Islamic economic system. This was stated by the Minister of State at the opening of the Islamic Economist Association of Islamic Economists (IAEI) Sarasehan in Jakarta, Thursday (15/5/2025).

“Synergies between the pillars of academia, bureaucracy, and practitioners can build an economy that not only aligns with Islamic values, but also ultimately creates a justice that is not conceptual but a reality, and then creates perceived prosperity,” said Sri Mulyani.

According to the Minister, sharia economics is not only a matter of halal and haram, but includes principles of governance that uphold values such as trust, integrity, fatonah, and siddiq. Those values are an important foundation in creating an economic system that brings prosperity.

“The value of Lil Alamin in Sharia economics provides and encourages broad benefits for society and serves as an inspiration to build good governance,” said Sri Mulyani.

He also highlighted the IAEI's more than two-decade journey that has successfully blended academic and public policy contributions. Since the National Convention on Islamic Economics in 2004, the IAEI has consistently strengthened Islamic values-based scientific and strategic thinking.

“I would like to express my appreciation and gratitude to the founders of the IAEI, the seniors, as well as the entire management team, both at the central and regional levels, who have dedicated their time, energy and thoughts to building and developing the IAEI, and thinking about how the value of Islam can be an uninterrupted source of inspiration,” the Minister said.

Sri Mulyani stressed that the role of the IAEI as a vessel for cross-sectoral collaboration is important in strengthening the national Islamic economic system. Such synergies are considered key in presenting policies that are not only conceptual, but also have a real impact on society.
